Meet Las Jefazas – Afro-Cuban Women Leaders Cultural Exchange

About This Experience

This structured cultural exchange takes place at Centro de las Raíces, Cuba’s first cultural center dedicated to Afro aesthetics and identity and headquarters of the Beyond Roots initiative. The program offers participants the opportunity to engage directly with the women leaders—known as Las Jefazas—who bring the project’s mission to life. The term jefaza reflects Beyond Roots’ horizontal leadership philosophy, in which every team member assumes responsibility and leadership within her role. While the project is led by its founder, Adriana, each woman contributes actively to sustaining and expanding the initiative’s impact within the Afro-Cuban community. During this experience, participants learn how Beyond Roots promotes cultural identity, entrepreneurship, natural hair education, and community empowerment through its independently operated store and salon. The visit includes open dialogue with Las Jefazas about their professional journeys, challenges, and the daily work involved in sustaining a community-based initiative in Cuba. This experience is intentionally designed to foster meaningful engagement and provide direct economic support to independent Afro-Cuban women entrepreneurs, in full alignment with the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Support for the Cuban People travel authorization (31 CFR §515.574).
